Like many other European canines, these puppies had a hard time during World War II and were almost extinct by 1945. However, dedicated breeders located just six dogs and began rebuilding the breed’s population.

Today, the Cavaliers have fully rebounded and become a favorite household pet. They were officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1995 as a part of the Toy Group.

Color: According to the American Kennel Club, there are four basic types of Cavs. The Blenheim has a white pearly coat with chestnut markings on body, head, and ears. The Ruby is a rich red all over. The Black and Tan has a black coat with tan markings above the eyes, muzzle, chest, and legs. The Tri-Color is black and white with tan markings above the eyes, cheeks, ears, and legs.
